Calgary Gardens – How To Grow A Vegetable Garden
Have you always thought of having a vegetable garden like those you see in Calgary gardens? You can follow these simple steps on how to start a small scale vegetable growing.
Step 1
Grow only those vegetables you enjoy eating.Give priority to those prized for incredible flavor when eaten fresh from the garden: sweet corn, beans and peas, tomatoes and young spinach, among others.
Step 2
Make sure you have a smooth ground in your Gardens Calgary where the sun can easily warm it up.Tend the soil and spread some humus or leaf mold.A full day of blazing sunshine is especially important if you grow vegetables in the cool weather of early spring, early fall or winter.
Step 3
Find out the spot where you’re plants will grow. Tomatoes can be spaced by around one and a half feet, while lettuce can be cultured in a level mat. Give pumpkins at least 4 feet (120 cm) of growing room. Growing requirements are provided on seed packets, in catalogs, and on nursery tags, as well as in books on growing vegetables.
Step 4
Plants shrubs that does not require too much space if you’re garden is small. Lettuce is a great pot plant, and ‘Patio’ or ‘Tumbler’ tomatoes will grow well in a hanging basket. Plants that climb and vine, such as cucumbers and pole beans, can be trained up a trellis to take up less room horizontally. Gather in a flowerbed the basil herbs.
Step 5
Line up the way you’re going to grow the different crops according to the season in your region. Common cool-season vegetables include beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, peas, potatoes, radishes, spinach and turnips. Some crops you can sow in the summer are the cucumbers, beans, eggplants and pumpkins. You can also plant tomatoes, squash, bell peppers and sweet corn.
Step 6
Sow some seeds directly in the ground as they grow best that way: beans, beets, carrots, chard, corn, lettuce, melons, peas, pumpkins, squash and turnips. You will probably spend more in planting seedlings so you’re better off with the starting seeds.
Step 7
Unless you have been tending the vegetable garden for a long time, go witht the nursery seedlings of crops. These plants tend to do better when set out in the garden as seedlings: eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. Some plants that you can plant effectively as seeds and seedlings are squash and cucumber.
Step 8
New year is the best time to order the seedlings and seeds for shops usually have fresh selections. Make sure to look into the labels. The packets should read for the current year.
Step 9
Get the best choices from the catalogs given by seed companies. Or better yet you can browse on the internet.
Step 10
Shop for seedlings when your soil is prepared and you are ready to plant.
Make sure they have enough water and they don’t dry up.
Use only the seedlings which are vital and healthy. The signs that they are good should be their green leaves with no holes (caused by insects).
Shop for some fish pond supplies as well for your garden pond. These are necessary supplies too for the overall efficiency of your garden.
